I photographed the “Peephole” series in 1998, one Halloween night on Lincoln Road outside my art studio in Miami’s South Beach. This analog work was shot in B/W film with a wide angle lens rigged with extension rings and a handheld flash. The idea was to evoke the view through a door peephole, as one would have at many Art Deco apartments and hotel rooms in South Beach at the time. The result is a series of intimate close-up photographs taken during a night of street celebration, in what was then a proud Miami LGBTQ community that coexisted with established Beach families, immigrants, Bohemians, actors, visual and performance artists, musicians, poets and writers in a unique place, at a unique time in the history of Florida. This work was archived for twenty-eight-years as I traveled through life’s patches of dark and light, and other adventures. That is, until now.
